Our YW president said we cannot tie a value into our YW activities or have a value theme for the month. Is this true? Does anyone tie in their monthly lessons into a value for the month and/or use YW activities to help in a value experience? I have not seen anything that says we cannot do this. Please help with any literature and/or suggestions.

I have the Bright Ideas book that you listed above. It is a great book with LOTS of ideas and websites. I found it to be current, seems like some of the church materials are 90's era, these kids are techie, they want new stuff!

I've found that yw succeed in personal progress, if it is discussed and read. Whether that be in family night at home, on Sunday during class - when it fits in with the lesson, on your activity night, or during the regular interviews the yw are supposed to have with their leaders. Some leaders put these interviews on the back burner and just don't do them on a regular basis. I like going to the girls's home for just 15 minutes. We read a bit of their personal progress book, talk about what they have done, chart it for my records, and then talk about what they are currently doing and some things they would like to do down the road a bit. Just do one or two visits every now and then and you'll be surprised to see the progress. The personal attention in their home is sweet for them and gives you new insights. I believe this is one way we can shepherd the Savior's tender young women. If you keep in touch with your young women by e-mailing. You can send free encouraging & inspiring LDS Greats Reminders to them for free. My favorite is the Phillipians scripture. www.ldsgreats.com/reminders-email-reminders-c-2_56.html This can brighten their day and give them the strength to keep working on their personal progress. The other thing you can do as a leader is work on your personal progress right with them. Example speaks volumes.

I believe (having just been released from a YW Stake Presidency and called to be YW Ward President) that the idea with personal progress is that it is a "personal" program - girls to choose individual goals that they feel they need to work on (in addition to the 3 required value experiences) The official lds.org site says that personal progress can be done occassionally on mutual nights but not on a regular basis -

There is no reason not to! In every ward I have ever been in, that's how the young women program was run. If it doesn't say anything in the hand book, then I'd say your free to do it. At the same time, she is the president and she has the final say. There are a few things that I don't agree with that my yw president wants me to do, but she is in charge. I'd say talk to her, explain the benefits and tell her how you feel. If it really bothers you go to the bishop and ask for his advice.
Good luck!

I heard that we couldn't do personal progress for activites anymore, but we can have the value of the month for a theme
