We did this as a combined young women & young men activity -- but it would also be fun just combined YW!!!
The night of the auction we asked kids to bring stuff they didn't want anymore, and wouldn't mind giving to someone else. We had all sorts of things... clothes, books, a small digital keyboard, posters, toys, an art set, purses, sports equipment.... anything they brought.
The kids earned "money" (points) by filling out a special sheet we had prepared. For example: 1 point for saying your prayers in the last week, 1 point for doing the dishes in the last week, 1 point for reading your scriptures, 1 point for walking your sibling to school... you get it. The # of points determined the amount of fake money they had to spend at the auction.
The kids came in to the gym where we hade everything lined up on tables. At on end they recieved their money and some stickers. As they walked past the items they put a sticker on anything they might be interested in buying. This helped us determine what items were 'hot' and what items not to sell.
Ahead of time we asked a member of our ward to be the auctioneer. We choose someone who was outspoken, could keep the kids' attention and keep a fast paced flow. (We choose a high school teacher ).
We wrapped up the evening with "One man's junk is another man's treasure."
Anyway, the kids, the girls AND the boys had fun and all went home with new stuff. Even myself, a leader, found some new treasures.
