I have been in Cub Scouts for many, many years and have kind of lost touch with what goes on in the rest of the ward's world. In our YW, I have been called as the Mia Maid Advisor, and I work directly with the YW 1st counselor. Thus, there are two adults and the 3-4 girls in our classes. Do other wards double up on the leadership like this?
Occasionally only one of my Mia Maids would show up on Sunday, so with a new YW Presidency that was sustained 2 weeks ago, they decided to combine the Mia Maids and Laurels for classes and activities. I don't mind, but now I will only be "teaching" maybe once a month. It is also strange to have 5 or so YW leaders in the class with a smattering of Young Women.
I just wondered how other YW groups are organized. Does the "Advisor" teach every week, or does the teaching get traded off?
By the way.....I grew up in the Bountiful 12th ward, which shared the building with the 22nd ward. Is the moderator from Bountiful, or is that just a coincidence??

Oh! The Mia Maids are fun! Good luck! In my experience, it is common to have both the counselor and the advisor for each age group. I understand that our youth leaders were just told that they have to be two-deep all the time. Even when giving kids rides home. (Or, one leader can give 2 siblings a ride home... they just want to avoid anything one-on-one; you know, avoid the appearance of evil...). I find it easier to have 2 leaders anyway; so you have someone to back you up. As for dividing the lessons - I've seen it both ways. I've done it where I (as the Advisor) and the counselor swapped every other week; and (as the Advisor) I've taught every week. Usually though, it seems that Sunday lessons are reserved for the Presidency to teach the whole Young Women's group. I've also had a class so small that we had to combine with another group. The other advisor and I worked out a teaching schedule. I guess it's just whatever your situation is, and whatever works best for you and your girls. I just did what the President told me to. That's just coming form what I've experienced. What I've typed here is not written in church doctrine or anything. And, FYI, the moderator is from Northern Davis County, Utah - and our stake was just split into these new wards. Being 12th & 22nd Wards are purely a coincidence. A funny one!  |

I had this same situation arise when I was called as a Beehive advisor- except all three classes are combined, so it is not uncommon for there to be twice as many leaders as girls. The teaching is traded off between advisors and counselors, so it happens that I will not teach at all every other month. It is more fair that way, and I feel that it gives our few girls a chance to get to know all the leaders, not just the ones in their class.

Currently, we have the advisors responsible for teaching on Sundays (other then fast Sunday... then we rotate that responsiblity among the presidency). The Miamaid Advisor in our ward teaches every Sunday unless otherwise noted. The advisors are also welcome to attend mutual during the week but are not requested too. In your situation, it makes sense to rotate the responsiblity of teaching if you have another class combining with yours.
